Abstract
Earthsound Archaeological Geophysics were commissioned by Jacobs, to execute geophysical surveys at two sites along the proposed N15 Lifford to Stranorlar Road Scheme, County Donegal. Donegal County Council is engaged in the development of a realignment of the N15 between Lifford and Stranorlar, in County Donegal. As part of this development, an archaeological geophysical survey of two sites (Site 10 and Site 63) was required on the emerging preferred route. Both sites were adjacent to Recorded Monuments and geophysical survey was requested to determine the presence/absence of these sites and any associated archaeological features within the route corridor. Site 10 contains a medieval/post-medieval burial ground (DG079-00901). The edge of Site 63 encompasses the reported site of a medieval castle (DG078-019), which has no surface elements present above ground. The presence of these RMP sites means that the land is subject to legal instruments under the National Monuments Act (1930- 2004). Permissions to undertake the survey were obtained from the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (Licence Number 07R84) and the landowners (Site 10 - James Smith, Ballybogan, Lifford, County Donegal; Site 63 - Edward John O’Kane, Cavan Lower, Killygordan, County Donegal).
