Abstract
This site at Leshamstown 1 was excavated between 09 and 27 January 2006 by Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd (ACS) as part of the M3 Clonee–North of Kells Motorway Scheme on behalf of Meath County Council NRDO and the NRA under Ministerial Direction Number A017/025. The site consisted of a spread of burnt mound material, several associated pits, deposits, and a metalled surface or platform. These are thought to belong to one, prehistoric phase of activity, as also implied by the radiocarbon dates of 2130–1890 BC and 1970–1740 BC. A number of anomalous features, probably of (early) modern date related to agricultural land use, such as field boundaries and drainage ditches were also the subject of archaeological investigation. Modern agricultural activity contributed to the erosion of many of the archaeological deposits.
