Abstract
Focusing on the representative Kalavinka images of the Unified Silla and Chinese Tang Dynasty in Cheolgam Seonsa tower in Ssangbong temple and Mogao Cave 159, this study analyzed these music images and the musical instruments contained in them. The vigorous Buddhism development in the Tang Dynasty directly impacted religious belief in the East Asian cultural sphere, in particular for the Buddhist musical culture on Korean Peninsula. The Kalavinka images in both the Unified Silla and Chinese Tang Dynasty were direct manifestations of Buddhist tenets, representing a pure world and a harmonious voice of the Buddhist ideal world. The typical musical instruments were mainly from the Western region and central region of China. The development path of musical culture in the Kalavinka images was further revealed from an East Asian cultural sphere perspective in that the Qingshang and Qiuci music of Jiubu and Shibu musical categories in the Tang Dynasty had an important impact on the Buddhist music of both the Unified Silla and Chinese Tang Dynasty. This showed that music in the East Asian cultural sphere was grounded on common religious beliefs and values.
