Abstract
For about 60 years from 1962 until the present, the contents of scripture education have been included in Taiwan’s high school ‘National Language’ curriculum. However, such scripture education that has been conducted for a long time faced an unexpected turn around 2000. Such changes began in March 2000 when Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was elected president, reducing the content of high school scripture education was reduced to only Analects and Mencius. However, as Ma Ying-jeou of the Kuomintang of China(KMT) came into power in May 2005, the contents of the reduced scripture education were restored to the four books of Analects of Confucius(Lunyu), The Works of Mencius(Mengzi), The Great Learning(Daxue), and The Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong). Yet, as President Tsai Ing-wen of DPP came into Power in May 2016, Taiwanese high school scripture education is returning to the policy during President Chen Shui-bian’s term. As such, Taiwanese high school scripture education continues to undergo changes including expansion, reduction, and restoration in policy and content depending on the administration. Currently (2022), President Tsai Ing-wen of DPP is in power for a second term, and a major change is seen in high school scripture education from 2019 by entering the 108 Curriculum. Hence, this paper examined the development of Taiwanese high school scripture education, the policy of high school scripture education in 2022 with entry to the 108 Curriculum, and the actual education content. To do so, this study examined the current situation of Taiwanese high school scripture education by comparing the “Fundamental Readings in Chinese Culture” before 108 Curriculum and the one currently in use. Based on the results, the study sought to explore the meaning of Taiwanese high school scripture education and the direction it should take. It is hoped through this study that Taiwan's high school scripture education, which has a long history and experience, can serve as a beacon informing young people of the 21stcentury the value of Confucius scripture that is still valid. It is also expected that Taiwan's high school scripture education will serve as a model for youth scripture education in East Asian countries.
