Abstract
The purpose of this article is to deal with (German) mysticism, the main thought of the late Western Middle Ages. It also discusses human sin and human freedom from sin in Meister Eckhart's thought. The content of this article was as follows. First, the relationship between sin and human in Western medieval thought was discussed. Second, we discussed catharsis and transcendence as the restoration of sin. Third, the relationship between sin and temptation was discussed. Fourth, while discussing ‘Abgeschedenheit’, the core concept of Meister Eckhart’s mystical thought, the issue of restoration of a free and new human being and unity with God were dealt with. The results of this article were as follows. First, desire or attachment has redeemed man's freedom and made him a sinner. Second, the realization of the act of renunciation of desire or attachment is the practice of ‘Abgeschiedenheit’, and only then human beings can become free beings and experience unity with God. Third, the sinner could only repent and become free when he truly distinguished his true self from his false self.
