Abstract
Ancient Tibetan royal families and Bon (or Bön) were leading the government administration and rites by interacting with each others. The stabilization of the Tibetan Empire was implemented through the theocracy of Bon based on afterlife and religious expectations of commoners, Chenpo (the title of Tibetan kings) leading the people, and divinized royal authorities and its purpose and role can be found in ancestral and funeral rites of Bon's doctrines and scriptures. The ideology pursed through funeral rites is to pray for soul's eternity as a primitive religion and to show divine and supernatural powers of Bon priests(巫師). Based on these ideologic purposes of rite, funeral rites of Bon functioned as commemorative roles that living people are responsible and religiously revitalized Bon as a realistic purpose. This study analyze the role of Bon priests(巫師) based the background of Bon in the ancient Tibetan society. In addition, ancient Tibetan people's lifestyle and view of death are studied through funeral rites of Bon. Even if Tibetan religious doctrines, ideas, scriptures, and beliefs are important study objects, this study focused on funeral rites to understand the world of mind of ancient Tibetan people because their rites, especially funeral rites, are significant when taking the meaning of Tibetan reality, where religious rites show what the religion is to their lives, into consideration.
