Abstract
This study is a case study that developed a green consumption education program using action learning for fourth graders in elementary school, and applied developed program in the educational settings. This study aimed to analyze if developed educational program exerts a significant influence on the cultivation of elementary school students’ green consumption competency. To achieve the foregoing objectives, this study conducted a test targeting 50 students (25 students in the experimental and comparative groups respectively) in 2 classes of S elementary school in Jeju-si. For experimental group, this study carried out developed educational program for total 13 times on a weekly basis from September 23 through December 23, 2014, whereas no program was conducted targeting comparative group excepting regular curriculum of the school. In addition to the aforementioned, this study conducted ex ante and ex post test targeting experimental group and comparative group, and collected data through an introspection sheet prepared by the students to supplement quantitative analysis and used the data for qualitative analysis. Conclusions obtained through the case study are as follows. First, this study was able to reflect composition system of green consumption competency into the contents of green consumption education, and applied to the educational setting by developing a green consumption education for elementary school students using action learning as a teaching-learning method. Second, as a result of application of developed educational program, no statistically significant difference was found in the score of comparative group’s green consumption competency, but experimental group’s green consumption competency score showed a significant difference. Third, results of qualitative analysis also show that students recognized that one’s habit of consumption life affects environment, showing positive change of attitude through resolution for fulfillment of green consumption and hands-on activity. When thinking the results collectively, educational program developed in this study exerts a positive effect on the cultivation of green consumption competency capable of fulfilling ‘green consumption’ independently, and this study was able to confirm that action learning is one of teaching-learning methods that can be applied significantly to the actual education settings of elementary school. Accordingly, more educational programs using action learning shall be developed and both qualitative and quantitative studies for verification of effect must be activated for carrying out green consumption education in a more effective and practical type.
