Abstract
The purpose of this research is investigating the textuality of Yeomsong (short for Seonmun yeom ongjip) and Seolhwa (Seonmun yeomsong Seolhwa) . These texts are the most typical Korean Seon Buddhism. “Hyesim (慧諶, 1178-1234) persistently sought to create a textbook of realistic models of investigating the Hwadu and to present clever schemes for examining Gongan (公案) with the appreciative eyes of patriarchal teachers.” But it is just a general assessment. The textuality of them was not very clear. My study is centered on the political context of the Period of military rule of the Goryeo Dynasty. We need to analysis the civil service examination (科擧) of the Goryeo, especially Seungkwa (僧科) , the qualifications of applicants for Buddhist-items. The Buddhist monks could pass the highest-level state examination to recruit ranking officials during the Goryeo Dynasty. And a special government positions known as Seungkye (僧階) , was based on the Seungkwa. My research suggests that the Yeomsong seems to be a textbook for Seungkwa. And the Seolhwa seems to be a reference book to all question in the Yeomsong. That's not to say there aren't some spiritual development of Seon practice. Seon Buddhists are trained by reading the Yeomsong, thus they gain the perspective and logic of the Seon. And the Seolhwa helps their reading and troubles. This is a basic education for Seon training. The discussion of the master and disciple that followed is an advanced education. Like, these spiritual developments of Seon practice are based on the Yeomsong and Seolhwa.
