Abstract
In this study, I had some reinterpretations of the meaning of ‘Independence’ in the era of the Japan colonial period. Baek Yong Seongwho was widely known as a Korean independence activist and the subject of anti-Japan Independence Movement, especially the March 1st Declaration of Independence. But this strong impression result from the contemporary Korean`s Perception of him. That is just the paradigm of anti-Japanese and anti-communism. The meaning of ‘Independence’was diverse in the era of the Japan colonial period. In many cases, it did not target at an abstract nation that was called ‘Japan’. Independence fighters at that time had a critical mind to political economic power. Their ‘Independence’was independent from the antiimperialism. The people of the so-called pseudo-religions, including Baek Yong Seong, have an ‘Independence’in mind with a sense of social suffering. Recently the image of Baek Yong Seong is confirmed in Korean independence activist and ulterior leader of the March 1st Declaration of Independence. This attitude bespeaks an attitude toward Koreans the paradigm of anti- Japanese and anti-communism. But the Independence what he intended is not dumb down to ‘anti-Japanese’. His ideas about Independence was being considered from all sides. It ranges over social suffering of the day. Baek Yong Seong’s ‘Independence’is one of berbau that based on Unterbau. The DaegaggyoMovement is independent of the religion from the political economic power and established Korean Buddhism that was ignored by the contemporaries. He was somewhat a Korean independence activist. But he was a leading figure to plan carefully the problem of Buddhist social ethics.
