Abstract
The thesis examines Seong Ho Lee Ik(星湖 李瀷)'s view on I-Hsueh, who was one of the leading realists during the late Chosun Dynasty. Three main points were drawn from the study. Firstly, Seong Ho regarded 'Zhou Yi(周易)' as an integrated outcome of three Yi. Instead of interpreting Zhou Yi merely as one of the three Yi along with Lian Shan(連山) and Gui Zang(歸藏), he appreciated that Zhou Yi had integrating power that embraced essential features of Lian Shan and Gui Zang. Secondly, he successfully deduced Xian Tian Tu(先天圖) and Hou Tian Tu(後天圖) from the Ho Tu(河圖). Although these two ideas were originally suggested by Shao Yung(邵雍)(1011-1763), only the symbolic significance had been stressed without clarifying the ground for setting the directions. Seong Ho asserted a convincing case by focusing on nature of numbers laid out in the Ho Tu, classification of quantity and four directions due to the concept of Yin and Yang, and the forming order of five elements; based on these, Seong Ho developed his all-embracing view on I-Hsueh. Thirdly, Seong Ho produced a rational alternative to a decision-making that heavily relied on fortunetelling. Fully recognizing logical contradiction of Chu Hsi(朱熹)(1130-1200)'s method of divination, Seong Ho provided a new method, which manifested his remarkably rational reasoning that seeks an answer through exhaustive doubt of ideas.
