Abstract
The refurbishment of the Apollo-Cahora Bassa HVDC system between South Africa and Mozambique required the application of state of the art technology in order to get the availability and reliability of the HVDC scheme to levels that are in accordance with present day power electronic and power equipment standards. This paper deals with the refurbishment of the open-loop control system for the Apollo Converter Station and how the goals of high reliability and availability were achieved.
