Abstract
Given the close connection between electrostatic and gravitational potentials, it can be argued that interest in evaluating singular integrals dates back to Newton. In the modern era, beginning with the widespread availability and use of computers, interest has focused on the numerical evaluation of (near-)singular potential integrals. In the more recent era of fast methods, this interest has been sustained by the realization that their evaluation remains a bottleneck for the further development of efficient integral equation solvers.
