Abstract
In this paper, the STATCOM is represented as a detailed Neutral Point Clamp (NPC) Gate Turn Off Thyristor (GTO) switch-based converter, and its controller is developed in dq-Axis, which is based on a synchronous reference frame. Along with the voltage and reactive power regulators, the current and voltage controllers are also included in the converter model. The voltage regulator of STATCOM has the flexibility to function either with or without a droop-based AC voltage control mode. The entire model of STATCOM, coupled with three source transmission lines, is developed as a simulation model in the HYPERSIM electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation software. The real-time simulation of the system is performed on the OPAL-RT Target in software-in-loop simulation mode in order to determine the effectiveness of the STATCOM controller. The outcomes of this real-time simulation case study are recorded and analysed to validate the results.
