Abstract
Ultrasound is a commonly used for medical diagnosis, and it can also be used for therapy. By using a curved transducer, ultrasound waves can be concentrated to create a focused beam that can stimulate tissues or cause thermal damage. Passive acoustic mapping (PAM) can be used with diagnostic ultrasound to monitor treatments and ensure safety. However, PAM is mainly used with closed diagnostic ultrasound platforms, which limits the integration of a full therapeutic ultrasound system. To address this issue, we have developed an FPGA-based ultrasonic therapeutic imaging monitoring system. We have demonstrated that this system is capable of PAM imaging, and offers several advantages including low cost, portability, and high processing power. This system can be dedicated to guiding therapeutic ultrasound. By using FPGAs, we have improved upon existing ultrasound technology, paving the way for more advanced medical procedures.
