The article shows how the manual process step of type substitution during a factory planning project can be automated using clustering algorithms. For this purpose the process of type substitution is systematically analyzed and the requirements for the clustering algorithm are derived. Based on these requirements, different algorithms are selected and applied in two examples. By comparing the results a suitable algorithm can be selected. On this basis, the resulting overall process for type representative formation is presented.
