This study of Sir Michael Tippett's operas deals with The Midsummer Marriage, King Priam and The Knot Garden, but refrains from comment on the new opera The Ice Break which is still essentially incomplete. The thesis should be read in conjunction with the vocal scores, for the method of discussion is 'chronological' in the sense that the analysis of words and music follows the pattern of dramatic events from first to last. Each chapter however is framed by an introduction and a conclusion, and substantial parenthetic asides occur where necessary.
