Abstract
A biennial event attracting singers form every corner of the globe who compete for opera's most coveted crown in the world's most prestigious vocal contest. Cardiff Singer of the World has launched the careers of many exceptional young singers. There is a tremendous atmosphere in St David's Hall, everyone has their personal favourite and the standard is incredibly high. The 1999 competition drew contestants from 25 nations. After the preliminary heats, the finalists were Mariusz Kwiecien (Poland), Anja Harteros (Germany), Dae-San No (Korea), James Westman (Canada), and Petia Petrova (Bulgaria), with Korea winning the Lieder Prize and Germany' s Anja Harteros announced as the winner.
