Abstract
The potential positive contributions of urban factories towards the sustainable development of cities have been increasingly recognized in recent years. Urban factories can contribute to the economic development and social welfare of cities. However, factories embedded in urban surroundings are still often associated with negative impacts such as noise, light, or particle emissions. The impacts of a specific urban factory result from the interrelationship between the factory, its products and the city. Products define the design and operation of its factory system in various aspects. In order to capture potential interdependencies and impacts of urban factories on their urban surroundings, it is crucial to take a holistic product perspective to avoid problem shifting. We propose a framework and an analytical methodology based on an influence analysis to elaborate the impacts resulting from manufacturing products in urban areas. First, relevant product characteristics are identified that mainly determine the design and operation of their urban production system. In a second step, urban impact categories are investigated to elaborate the potential influences of urban factories on their urban surrounding. The developed methodology can help to identify the product characteristics with the main leverage to reduce negative impacts. Based on these findings, the methodology subsequently can serve as a tool for designing urban products considering the most relevant characteristics towards the vision of a positive impact factory.
