Highlights •S-nZVI@CD/PMS system synchronizes the degradation of NOR and ARG in natural water.•Cyclodextrin provides activation sites and controls release of the radicals.•ESR and quenching confirm SO4•− and •OH radicals dominate in the S-nZVI@CD/PMS process.•The key to synchronized removal is radicals attack on NOR and DNA vulnerable sites.
