Abstract
Highlights •The surface-modified aluminum–lithium alloy was prepared for the first time by a facile self-assembly method, and the optimum processing time was determined.•The morphology and composition of the coating layer of Al-Li alloy were characterized in detail by various methods, and the actual coating effect was tested.•The FAS17-modified Al-Li alloy powders were added into the HTPB propellant formulation for the first time, and the combustion properties of the propellant grain were tested.•The mechanism of FAS17 surface modification to improve the incompatibility of Al-Li alloy in the propellant system was summarized.•The propellant grain containing FAS17-modified Al-Li alloy powders has excellent combustion performance, which is expected to be applied to solid propellants.
