Abstract
Highlights •Characterisation of the individual influence of martensite banded structures on damage.•Numerical approach allows for isolated consideration of separate microstructure constituents.•For bending tests banded martensite shows to be the main driver for damage initiation.•Results show a delayed damage initiation for microstructures without banding by 2 to 20%.
