Highlights •High Zn cultivars achieved higher grain Zn in calcareous soils due to increased Zn uptake.•High Zn cultivars activated more Zn in the rhizosphere soil, particularly during the jointing stage with P application.•Root Zn acquisition of high Zn cultivars was unaffected at key growth stages with P application.•High Zn cultivars exhibited enhanced Zn translocation from roots to shoots during the filling stage with P application.
