Abstract
Highlights •Knowledges of CWs and HMM hyperaccumulators were merged for the first time.•Immobilization in sediments remains the main mechanism of HMM removal in CWs.•Plant uptake and accumulation of HMMs are currently inefficient in CWs.•Candidate HMM hyperaccumulators were provided for CW application.•Issues in the scenarios of hyperaccumulation used in CWs were discussed.
