Highlights •Identifying core players for sulfate-reduction coupling PAH degradation in sediment.•Desulfovibrio sp. SB8 and Petrimonas sp. SB8 had potential synergistic relationships.•Desulfovibrio sp. SB8 could degrade PAHs, reduce sulfate and detoxify oxygen stress.•Petrimonas sp. SB8 could degrade the downstream metabolites of PAHs and sulfate.
