Highlights •The nonlinear elastic behavior of rail beam is predicted by the closed form solution.•Simple support and clamped support are considered for deflection prediction.•The horizontal tensile force significantly reduces the deflection of the beam.•Experiments validate the formulation of the nonlinear elastic deflection.•A smart mounting system provides horizontal support for deflection reduction.
