Abstract
High fusion power (0.1 to above 1 GW) tokamaks now under consideration can be expected to provide collimated (Δθ ≤ ± 0.02 rad) neutron fluxes up to 10[sup 11] n/s cm². This presents special opportunities for neutron measurements to diagnose the plasma but would also make it possible to perform neutron irradiation or cross-section studies. It is proposed that the neutron flux can be characterized with high count rate magnetic proton recoil (MPR) spectrographs. These can also be used as continuous flux monitors in the beam constituting an interesting neutron test channel. The main beam properties and the monitoring capabilities are presented and examples of how the neutron test channel can be used are given. Especially, the possibility to calibrate neutron yield activation measurements is discussed. The proposed method would reduce the error in absolute yield determinations for fusion plasmas to the 5% level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
