Abstract
The article analyzes how paleolithic images were used by prehistorians and archaeologists to help disseminate theories during the first half of the 20th century. It discusses Spanish archaeologist Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola and his publishing on his discovery of cave paintings in the Altamira Cave in Spain in 1880 and the views of French Catholic priest, archaeologist, anthropologist and geologist Henri Breuil concerning paleolithic art. Additional topics include the question of survival raised by French archaeologist Salomon Reinach, the authenticity of cave paintings, and paleolithic images used as a way to offer information on the life and thought of the paleolithic civilization.
