Abstract
The article discusses the contributions of several Russian surgeons to thyroid surgery. Nikolai Ivanovic Pirogov performed the first strumectomy in Russia in 1847, while Vasili Ivanovich Razumovsky was the first to describe medullary and anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid in 1904. A total thyroidectomy was performed by Nikolai Vasilievich Sklifosovsky in a male patient with a goiter causing dyspnea on October 9, 1874.
