Abstract
The essay considers the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century experiences and beliefs of American missionaries to Japan Galen M. Fisher, John Merle Davis, and George Gleason of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Topics explored include changes in perceptions regarding both American and Japanese imperialism, republican nationalism, race, social equality, and Christian internationalism.
