Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of actual and ideal body ratings to peer relationships and physical self-concept in Chinese children. Participants were 194 Chinese children aged 10-12 years from two primary schools in Hong Kong, China. Valid and reliable questionnaires were administered to assess the associations between physical self-concept (Physical Self-Perception Profile [PSPP]), peer relationships (Peer Relationship Index [PRI]), and actual and ideal body rating (silhouette matching task [SMT]). Hierarchical regression analyses showed that only attractive body and global self-worth made unique contributions to peer relationships. Significant group differences were found in physical condition, physical strength and attractive body in the three different weight perception groups on the scales of PSPP and PRI, respectively. The present study revealed that compared to normal weight children, overweight children rate themselves more negatively in terms of body attractiveness and peer relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
