Abstract
The article presents the author's reflections on the social acceptance of narcissistic behavior in the United States as of 2012. Introductory comments are offered noting how Narcissistic Personality Disorder will cease to be a category of mental illness in the 5th version of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM 5). Distinctions are made between formal narcissistic disorders and the common vice of narcissism, but both are described as powerfully negative issues. It is then suggested that popular trends in mass media and political journalism enable and normalize narcissistic behavior to the detriment of society.
