Abstract
The article discusses the historical controversy surrounding the article by John Gillingham which appeared in a previous issue which forwarded the idea the Kingdom of England was named by Anglo-Saxon King Egbert, ninth-century king of the West Saxons. The author questions the reliability of the source of this story which was referred to in the entry for 828 in the Winchester Annals, compiled by a 12th-century monk Richard of Devizes. The reliability and creative storytelling abilities of Richard is compared to other Medieval historians.
