Abstract
The article discusses the archaeological excavation of rock art in caves in Arnhem Land, northern Australia. Particular focus is given to the cultural sensitivity of the archaeological dig due to the fact that the paintings were believed to have been made by ancestors of the Jawoyn aboriginal Australian tribe. Subjects of the paintings, which include extinct bird such as the Genyornis newtoni and the tasmanian tiger, are highlighted and comments are provided regarding the excavation by rock art expert Robert Gunn and Monash University professor Dr. Bruno David. Comparisons between this site and the Lascaux and Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc caves of France are provided. The use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) to date the paintings is also discussed.
