Abstract
The article discusses the hagiography from medieval Ireland which celebrated saints who performed abortions and restored women to a virginal state. Medieval Irish hagiographers' perspective on illegitimate children, including their ability to become saints and bishops, is discussed. An overview of medieval Irish penitentials' permissive attitudes concerning the female body and reproductive systems, pregnancy, sexuality and contraception is provided. The role of saints and women as abortionists is discussed.
