Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the Williamsburg neighborhood within Brooklyn, New York City, New York during the 2000s. A particular focus is given to the predominantly white professionals and self-proclaimed artists who reside there, who are referred to as hipsters. An overview of the demography of Williamsburg's population, which includes Hasidic Jews, Puerto Ricans, Poles and Italians, is presented. An overview of Williamsburg's hipster counterculture, including its sense of solidarity, aesthetic sensibility, artistic proclivity and its rejection of mainstream society, is provided.
