Abstract
The article presents some details of Cornish wrestling in Australia during the second half of the 19th century when it helped sustain a strong sense of Cornishness. It cites the short, loose jacket worn by the wrestlers as the most distinctive feature of Cornish wrestling, which takes place on any piece of flat grass in a ring made up of two concentric circles. Cornish wrestling declined by the last decade of the 19th century as Cornish immigration diminished, Cornish migrant communities were fragmented and interest in Cornish societies faded.
