Abstract
The article examines the associated factors and impact of constipation on long-term ventilated patients and the association of delayed defecation with logistic organ dysfunction scores, acquired bacterial infections, and mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU). The variables affecting the time to first passage of stools are presented. Patients with late defecation have greater length of ICU stay, longer duration of mechanical ventilation and central venous catheter use, and high mortality rates.
