Abstract
The article discusses risk factors that may contribute to stillbirth and preventive measures that may be taken prior to conception and during the pregnancy. Statistics show that of the 3 to 4 million stillbirths that occur per year, 98% are in developing countries and there are twice as many incidents with black women as white women. Risk factors include obesity, multiple gestation and alcohol intake. Preconception care includes screening for sexually transmitted diseases, folic acid intake and optimal spacing of pregnancies.
