Abstract
What is going on in our high school corridors? Is student resistance on the rise again or is secondary policy feeding the monster? The information in this study was accumulated by a participant observer over two months in a secondary school in an Illinois blue chip community? The researcher was employed to control the corridors on a daily basis and interacted with the disciplinary staff, the faculty, and the students of this high school. At the conclusion of the observation, the researcher explained the illuminating interactions through a student typology, coded student and controller behavior patterns, and a sociological analysis. Student resistance and controller uncertainty are two themes that emerge from the data. The findings suggest that secondary policy tends to give rise to student resistance in secondary settings.
