Abstract
As traditional institutions lose their authority in the "postmodern" era, it is to be expected that traditional (official) shrines (Mount Rushmore, The White House) will lose their meaning. Likewise, it is to be expected that popular (unofficial) shrines (the Corn Palace, Wall Drugs, the Tupperware Museum) will replace them, their celebration giving legitimacy to the popular experience.
