Abstract
The article presents a report on the historical significance of the two excavated Middle Paleolithic sites from the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine. The sites are known as Kiik-Koba and the Starosele. At both the sites the presence of human remains drew the attention of western scholars. The excavations at Kiik-Koba was undertaken between the year 1924 and 1925 by Archeologist Bonch-Osmolovski. Kiik-Koba digging came out with the first Neanderthals and the first systematic Middle Paleolithic assemblage. The excavations at Starosele was undertaken between the years 1952 and 1956 by Archeologist A. Formozov. The site, which is called a cave, is an accumulation of natural and cultural materials resting on a rock platform. The excavation at this site also produced remains of two human beings, which appeared to a child and a partial adult. The remains of the child does not establish a clear association of the child either with the Neanderthal or with the Modern. The details of both the excavations are given in the report.
