Abstract
Chapter 1 of the book "Caribbean AIDS Epidemic" is presented. It provides an overview of the prevalence of AIDS, HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in the region. The countries that have the highest cases of AIDS in 1996 per 100,000 population were Bahamas with 146.6%, Bermuda with 66%, Barbados with 50.3%, Trinidad and Tobago with 33.4% and Jamaica with 22.3%. From 1993 to 1994, the prevalence of HIV among pregnant women in Guyana was 3.65%.
