Abstract
The article considers the limitations of definitions of feminist art as a political activity. It notes that it is necessary to understand representation as a political issue and to have an analysis of women's subordination within patriarchal forms of representation in order to develop a feminist artistic practice that works towards productive social change. It re-examines the feminist relationship of art and politics. It offers an evaluation on how femininity itself as a social construct. It offers four strategies in the typology of women's art-making, which includes the glorification of an essential female power, a form of sub-cultural resistance, potential isolationism, and situating women at a crucial place in patriarchy which enables them to play on the contradictions within it.
