Abstract
This article presents news from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this report, the CDC looks at unregistered deaths among very low birthweight babies in Ohio during 2006. Although these babies account for less than 1 percent of all births in the U.S., they also account for one-third of the total infant mortality rate. Often, these infants die very quickly which could lead to their deaths being misclassified as fetal deaths. This could lead to a distortion of the overall infant mortality rate and could impact medical policy decisions. The study found that 7 percent of low birthweight infants born in Ohio were misclassified during the time period and were not registered as infant mortalities.
