Abstract
The article presents a study which assesses the extent of insurance and employment problems associated with population screening involving 101,168 primary care patients from the U.S. and Canada for iron phenotypes and hemochromatosis gene (HFE) genotypes associates with hemochromatosis. A clinical examination was offered to 2,253 participants who were identified to be at risk, while 1,154 of these participants who responded to initial questionnaire concerning psychosocial issues were surveyed after one year. From these 1,154 participants, only 0.4% had verified problems with insurance or employment that they think were related to hereditary hemochromatosis and iron overload.
