Abstract
The article reports on the capture of German soldiers by Allied forces at the Italian coastal city of Anzio on January 22, 1944. It describes Operation Shingle. Major General John Lucas noted that the Allied landings at Anzio were an unexpected success. The speed and surprise of the attack had given the Germans no time in which to react.
