Abstract
The article presents an essay on deaf culture. The author is a hearing person who enrolled in an American Sign Language (ASL) class. His teacher is deaf but does not see herself as disabled. He notes that ASL is the third most widely used language in the U.S. He reveals that the hearing see deaf people as a disabled and minority group. He proposes that respecting one another as the solution to the tension between the two cultures.
