Abstract
The article focuses on effective workplace learning for general practice (GP) specialty training. Participation, not observation, is central to learning. There are various conditions for effective learning, including strong goals, improvised learning practices, individual engagement, workplace environment and professional identity. There is a need for well-negotiated participatory status within secondary care for the future specialist training placements for GP vocational training schemes. There is also a need for the publication of a curriculum for general practice.
