Abstract
The article focuses on the need for creative solutions such as the implementation of seed saving methods as a critical strategy in the preservation of the purity of maize seed in Mexico. The author points out that Mexico has the most biodiverse maize crop in the world but the maize industry is under threat. Significantly, the introduction of the North America Free Trade Agreement has presented a marked change in the way that maize was produced and sold in the country. Furthermore, agricultural dumping has flooded the local market and made it difficult for Mexican farmers to survive. Moreover, studies have suggested that transgenic maize from the U.S. has found its way into the indigenous gene pool. Finally, since maize extends to every aspect of Mexican life, such seed saving policy must take into account every aspect of life.
