Abstract
This article reports on New Orleans, Louisiana three months after Hurricane Katrina. Less than a quarter of the city's pre-Katrina population are back in residence. Hundreds of city blocks await bulldozing and most public schools remain closed. Three of the city's 10 hospitals are open to serve a population that reaches 150,000 at its daytime peak.
